DNV GL, in its current structure, become operational in 2013 as a result of the merger between the Norwegian (Det Norske Varitas, 1864) and the German (Germanischer Lloyd, 1867) classification societies.

Metropolitan College is the only college accredited as a Maritime Training Provider (DNVGL-ST-0029) by the world leading DNV GL Classification Society. This accreditation is highly important, not only because of the significance of the provider, but primarily because of what it actually entails: successful and continuous quality control in every process of developing, providing and evaluating academic programmes, quality in programme planning and targeting, in academic staff selection and finally, in programme evaluation and improvement based on maritime needs.

MCA

Maritime & Coastguard Agency

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s work is to prevent the loss of life on the coast and at sea. MCA is the UK Coastguard responsible for the safety of everybody on a vessel in UK waters, the safety of all seafarers on UK flagged ships, making sure all equipment on UK vessels is fit for purpose and all seafarers on UK vessels have correct documentation, the environmental safety of UK coasts and waters, the accuracy of hydrographic data on UK charts, overseeing coastal rescue volunteers, hydrographics, seafarer certification and the port state control inspection regime. MCA also produces legislation, offers guidance on maritime matters, and provides certification to seafarers. It should be noted that MCA is one of the most powerful coastguards in the world.

Metropolitan college has been accredited by MCA for fully providing EDH (Efficient Deck Hand) and HELM-O (Human Element Leadeship & Management – Operational Level) programmes in Greece, taking place in the special facilities in Piraeus Campus. Moreover, Merchant Navy Officer and Yacht/Superyacht academic programmes shall be provided in Greece following MCA approval, whereas Maritime Competency Certificates for students successfully completing the programmes in question are directly issued by MCA.

IAMI

International Association of Maritime Institutions

The International Association of Maritime Institutions is primarily an association of organisations involved in providing education and training for personnel in all maritime sectors. It is based in the UK and includes in its membership all of the major providers of courses leading to statutory Department of Transport certification, as well as the IMarEST (Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology) and the Nautical Institute.

The aim of IAMI is to provide a platform for an exchange of views between academic institutions along with a channel of communication between academic institutions and the various national bodies involved in the training and certification process. IAMI is on the consultation list of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) of the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions, the UK regulatory body for marine matters, and its members frequently come into contact regarding both day-to- day practicalities and future developments.

Metropolitan College has been certified by IAMI as a provider of G.U.E.S.T., the internationally accredited training programme for Yacht Stewards, whereas Metropolitan College Maritime Academy Engineer Cadets must take an IAMI exam in order to obtain their certificate.

PYA

Professional Yachting Association

The Professional Yachting Association is a non-profit association which was founded in 1991, and exists primarily to represent the interests of professional yacht crew. The association has members from nearly 90 countries around the world and helps its members by verifying their sea service, and by providing accurate, unbiased advice on certification, training, welfare, and regulations. The PYA is supported by its Partners who are drawn from a variety of organisations providing services in this sector.   It represents the yachting industry at an administrative level, working to ensure that the voice of its members is heard by government regulators and at industry forums. The PYA is the only organization committed to helping professional yacht crew in this way.

Metropolitan College is the only accredited PYA member in Greece.

G.U.E.S.T.

Guidelines for Unified Excellence in Service Training

The G.U.E.S.T. programme is the training and assessment standards for all levels of Yacht Crew working in the hospitality and service Interior departments of a Super Yacht. The programme specifies the fundamental principles of providing 7 star services in the highly demanding yachting sector. G.U.E.S.T. is the only internationally recognized certification available to Yacht crew, accredited by the International Association of Maritime Institutions.

Metropolitan College is the only institution in Greece licensed to provide the specific programmes offered by the College Superyacht Academy, specializing in Yachting.

RYA

Royal Yachting Association

Royal Yachting Association is the UK national body for both recreational and / or professional practicing in all forms of boating. RYA’s purpose is to support and promote safe, successful and rewarding yachting practices.

Metropolitan College has been recognized as a RYA training centre, and provides training programmes of this internationally recognized institution.

Metropolitan College is also accredited by the two most prestigious professional societies in the shipping industry worldwide, namely the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).

ICS

Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers

Founded in 1911, the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers is the only internationally recognized professional body in the commercial maritime arena and it represents shipbrokers, ship managers and agents throughout the world. The ICS sets and examines the syllabus for membership, providing the shipping industry with highly qualified professionals.

Graduates of the Metropolitan College School of Maritime Studies are eligible for an exemption from a significant part of the ICS certification examinations, which enables them to achieve membership much sooner.

CILT

Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport supports professionals involved in transport and logistics and it is the world leading professional association in the supply chain.

Following the completion of Metropolitan College Maritime Studies undergraduate programmes, graduates obtain an individual exemption certificate from standard examination for membership.

Moreover, Metropolitan College is an associate member of BIMCO, INTERTANKO and INTERCARGO, namely the world’s greatest shipping associations, which, along with the International Chamber of Shipping,  constitute the Round Table of International Shipping Associations.

Baltic & International Maritime Council

BIMCO is the world’s largest international shipping association, with around 2,000 members globally, and provides a wide range of services to its global membership – which includes shipowners, operators, managers, brokers and agents.

BIMCO is recognized worldwide for the clarity, consistency and certainty of its standard maritime contracts.

International Association of Independent Tanker Owners

INTERTANKO (the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners) is a trade association that has served as the voice for independent tanker owners since 1970, representing the interests of its Members at national, regional and international levels. The organization champions an industry dedicated to support global energy networks by delivering safe, efficient and environmentally sound transport services.

INTETANKO’s aim is to provide leadership to the Tanker Industry in serving the world with the safe, environmentally sound and efficient seaborne transportation of oil, gas and chemical products, whereas its vision is a responsible, sustainable and respected Tanker Industry, committed to continuous improvement and constructively influencing its future.

INTERCARGO

International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners

he International Association of Dry Cargo Shipowners (INTERCARGO) is representing the interests of quality dry cargo shipowners. INTERCARGO convened for the first time in 1980 in London and has been participating with consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) since 1993.

INTERCARGO provides the forum where dry bulk shipowners, managers and operators are informed about, discuss and share concerns on key topics and regulatory challenges, especially in relation to safety, the environment and operational excellence. The Association takes forward its Members’ positions to the IMO, as well as to other shipping and international industry fora, having free and fair competition as a principle.

INTERCARGO is committed to safety and quality in ship operations, with a focus on operational efficiency and the protection of the marine environment.

As an associate member of these important maritime associations, Metropolitan College provides students with access to numerous sources of information and data, which may enable them to gain a better understanding of the shipping industry and the industry challenges ahead.

Metropolitan College is also a Marine Member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), as well as the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA).

Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology

The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology – IMarEST is the international professional body and learned society for all marine professionals, as well as the first Institute to bring together marine engineers, scientists and technologists into one international multi-disciplinary professional body.

IMarEST is the largest marine organisation of its kind with a worldwide membership based in over 120 countries and its vision is a world where marine resources and activities are sustained, managed and developed for the benefit of humanity.

Metropolitan College students have the opportunity to attend IMarEST seminars and have access to online material and webinars, offered regularly on a series of topics by the institute.

HELMEPA

Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association

The Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association is a pioneering voluntary commitment of Greek seafarers and ship owners to safeguard the seas from ship-generated pollution. Under the motto “To Save the Seas”, the Greek Shipping Industry has been consistently supporting this initiative since 1982 to date. The initiative aims for the human element of the Maritime Community to acquire an environmental consciousness and a spirit of safety towards achieving quality shipping, always at the service of humankind.

As a member of this Association, Metropolitan College fully supports the vision of HELMEPA and takes every opportunity to actively participate in actions and activities, aiming to communicate its work and enhance its presence.

THE NAUTICAL INSTITUTE

The Nautical Institute is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) with consultative status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Its aim is to promote professionalism, best practice and safety throughout the maritime industry, while its vision is to provide inspiration, knowledge and leadership to maritime professionals around the world.
