Description

Under the Engine Officers command, the Engine department is responsible for the safety, performance and efficiency of the vessel’s machinery. Engineer officers are responsible for the maintenance and operation of all mechanical and electrical installations of the ship. Moreover, a major aspect of their duties involves the immediate and effective problem solving related to the mechanical and electrical equipment of the vessel.

The BEng (Hons) Marine Engineering & Management programme has been designed to cover the entire scope of Marine Engineering: mechanical and electrical systems, thermodynamics, mechanics etc, so that graduates may be able to efficiently respond to the duties assigned to them on board. Young engineers are usually employed on board as 3rd Engineer Officers, undertaking ship duties and, as their skills and experience develop, they progress as officers, thus achieving the Engine Officers rank. There are considerable opportunities for engineers on land as well, and Engine Officers usually become Engine Officers in the company offices or they take over the management of the Technical Department.

Admission Requirements

Admission eligibility in the Metropolitan College Faculty of Shipping and Maritime Studies is dependent upon the following admission requirements:

• Successful completion of secondary education (High School Certificate)

• Satisfactory command of the English language (B2 level or 5.5 IELTS)
